This was just too good to be true.

 

A temporary elevated walkway had been erected over the Piazza del Duomo, and this meant that I could show the cathedral and the piazza together from a raised perspective.

 

And then the sailors turned up.

 

I love this photo: I’ve always seen it as a montage, with a Robert Doisneau street-scene spliced in front of an image pilfered from the Alinari Brothers 19th century archive.
