A dreaming spire designed in 1962 for St Catherine's College, Oxford, by Arne Jacobsen.
Set in riverside fields just to the north of the Oxford everybody knows, the college was conceived in the varsity tradition, with quadrangles and halls centred by a bell-tower.
It’s not neo-classical, it’s not neo-gothic and it’s built from concrete, but it has its own sense of dignity and gravitas, and it belongs.
Great architects know how to do that.
